From 26th September 2015, the European Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive will come into effect.  The targets of the Directive are to

Reduce energy usage by 20%

Increase the share of renewable energies by 20%

Achieve by 2020.

Heating and hot water generation is one of the largest users of energy in non domestic buildings and accounts for nearly half of the energy consumed.  Therefore the aim of the directive is to improve the efficiency of all Energy-related heating and hot water products up to 400kW.

The ErP Eco-Design regulations therefore require manufacturers of energy related products to meet a minimum energy performance standard, this is to encourage less efficient products to be replaced with higher efficiency alternatives.
